SimplyMap
Geographic Research, Inc.
http://digital.library.wisc.edu/1711.web/simplymap

SimplyMap is a web-based mapping site that allows users to create thematic maps and reports using demographic, business and marketing data. The product is particularly strong for recent estimates and projections, at geographic levels as small as ZIP codes, census tracts, or block groups. SimplyMap draws on Census 2000 data, 2006 & 2007 Census estimates, 2011 & 2012 Census projections. Other groups of variables include consumer expenditures, consumer price index, business counts, market segments, retail sales, and sales potential. Note: UW-Madison subscribes to SimplyMap via IP authentication. Each user must also register at the SimplyMap site to create a personal workspace.

PolicyMap
The Reinvestment Fund
http://www.policymap.com/

PolicyMap is a geographic information system that lets users map, graph, and organize data relevant to neighborhood planning and economic revitalization. The site carries data on demographics, real-estate, crime, income, education, and jobs – over 4,000 indicators. Depending on the data, maps and reports can be focused on areas as small as block groups or census tracts, or as large as states.

The site has many components available with a free registration, and others available to subscribers only. The free data comes from such agencies as the Census, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the Social Security Administration (SSA), and other US government agencies. Fee-based, subscriber-only data comes mostly from Claritas, a consumer-data and demographics firm that produces projections and annual small-area estimates. Subscribers can also upload data and create custom mapping regions. (UW-Madison does not subscribe).

The oldest data is from the 2000 Census, while the most current is the 2008 Presidential Contributions by state and ZIP code. A complete list of PolicyMap data can be found at http://www.policymap.com/our-data.html.

Voting America: United States Politics, 1840-2008
Digital Scholarship Lab, University of Richmond
http://www.americanpast.org/voting/

The Voting America site presents animated maps of presidential election data at the county level across time (actual returns, margin of victory, party strength, population, voter turnout).

The centerpiece of the animated "cinematic maps" is a timeline tour through presidential election data from 1840 onward. Cinematic maps for individual elections show a series of thematic maps, from state results to county results to numbers of votes to margins of victory. Another series of cinematic maps shows population growth over time for white and African American residents. Users can also choose "interactive maps" and pick their own years and indicators to display. An additional section of the site provides analysis and commentary in video form.

The underlying data for the Voting America site come from ICPSR study #8611 for the years 1840-1972, and from Polidata for 1976-2004.

European Data Center for Work and Welfare (EDACwowe)
University of Tilburg; Danish National Centre for Social Research
http://www.edacwowe.eu/en/

The European Data Center for Work and Welfare (EDACwowe) is a searchable collection of annotated links to websites containing data for European research and policy-making in the areas of work and welfare. The central topics covered by the site are income and benefits, social care, and work and employment. However, the links also touch on related fields such as demographics, education, taxes, health, migration, politics and elections, and quality of life. EDACwowe organizes its site, via a left-hand menubar, around the categories of Comparative Data, National Data, and International Repositories. The Comparative Data category is the most detailed, with subheadings for opinion surveys, socio-economic surveys, indicators and statistics, and policies and institutions. Each survey in the Comparative Data category gets a multi-part description on the EDACwowe site, from survey type to participating countries to topics to availability and searchability of questionnaires and data. The National Data category, by contrast, gives only links and archive names, and the International Repositories category gives a short descriptive paragraph for each link.

In April 2008, the Census Bureau announced that downloadable data files in Excel format have been added to the USA Counties site. Users can now bypass the drop-down menus and directly download files by topic, each file containing data for all of the counties nationwide.

TrafficSTATS

Carnegie Mellon University; AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety
http://www.aaafoundation.org/trafficSTATS/

The Traffic Statistics on Travel Safety site (TrafficSTATS) provides a tool for calculating traffic safety risks on various dimensions. Using data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System and the National Household Travel Survey, users can compare fatality risks for combinations of modes of transportation (e.g. car, SUV, motorcycle), demographic variables (e.g. age, gender), and other parameters (e.g. day of week, region of US). This can lead to combinations such as "teenagers driving at night in the summer" or "women over the age of 55 on motorcycles." Risks are stated in deaths per 100 million passenger miles, deaths per 100 million trips, and deaths per 100 million minutes of travel. Results can be downloaded in various formats such as XML, CSV, and Excel.
