Part 2: Datastream Advance: A Quick Guide


 Settings:
You can specify different settings in your output programs. Advance will provide a specific setting according to the output program you request. Below are just a couple of the settings available for you.

IV. Date Ranges:
On the lower right part of the screen is a yellow clock, . Click on it to specify the start date and end date. The fields in the Date Ranges menu can be different depending on the data categories and program selected.

 

V. Data Types:
The small DT icon on the lower right hand side let you specify a data type for your chosen data series if more than one data type exists. Click on the icon to see all the available data types.


Run Your Data Request:

Now you are ready to send your request to Datastream. Click on the button and the result will be displayed in the Output Window.


How to Export Data:
Results can be saved as an external file. Advance allows you to export charts, graphs and time series data to the output window in different formats. Charts and graphs can be saved as image files and then inserted into your document. Time series data can be saved in an Excel spreadsheet.

1. Saving Charts and Graphs:
On the Advance tool bar, select Tools and then Export. In the Export Viewport As window, save the file in the D:\temp directory. Give your file a name. Then select the file type as Computer Graphics Metafile (CGF) or Graphics Interchange Format (GIF).


2. Saving Time Series Data:
On the Advance tool bar, select Tools then Export. You can export time series data as Excel 4.0 worksheet, Excel 5.0 worksheet, comma-separated values, tabbed text, plain text or HTML. You need to save your file in the D:\temp directory.


You can also view the time series data in Excel, while you are in Advance. On the Advance tool bar, select Tools, Transfer and then Excel. Accept the default settings in the Transfer Settings window. After you click on OK, Excel will open this file as a spreadsheet . You can then save it as an Excel file.


There are limits to the Advance interface. It limits number of downloads to 10 time series, 1 or 2 graphs and reports. If you need time series data for many years, you might want to use the Datastream DSWindows interface to download data. A different set of help documents is available for using the DSWindows program. Please ask DPLS staff for help, if you would like to use the DSWindows interface.
