Princeton University Center for Research on Child Well-Being: "The Consequences of Multi-Partnered Fertility for Parental Involvement and Relationships," by Marcia Carlson and Frank Furstenberg (2006-FF-28, August 2006, .pdf format, 29p.).
Abstract:
At the nexus of major changes in marital and fertility behavior in recent decades is a new reality of contemporary family life -- the fact that a significant fraction of adults today (will) have biological children by more than one partner, sometimes referred to as "multi-partnered fertility," This increasing family complexity creates challenges for managing parental roles and responsibilities important to the effective care and socialization of children. In this paper, we use new data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study with propensity-score matching techniques to explore the consequences of multi-partnered fertility for family relationships about three years after a baby's birth in large U.S. cities. We examine couple relationship quality, coparenting, and parental engagement for couples where the mother or the father has a previous child by another partner. Overall, we find that a sizeable fraction of urban couples have one or more previous children and that these earlier parental obligations are strongly linked to the focal couple's ability to stay together and co-parent effectively. Fathers' having previous children is particularly deleterious -- at least from mothers' perspectives. We discuss the implications of our results for family roles in childrearing, the organization of kin networks, and current public policies.

NCHS is currently linking various NCHS surveys with Medicare enrollment and claims records collected from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Linkage of the NCHS survey participants with the CMS Medicare data provides the opportunity to study changes in health status, health care utilization and expenditures in the elderly and disabled U.S. population." Note: this data is restricted. Access information, as well as other information about the data, is available at:

B. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Web Tutorial: "To meet the growing demands of NHANES data users, a web-based tutorial was developed to promote and facilitate broader and more proficient use of NHANES data. The tutorial is intended to serve as: A step-by-step course on NHANES data retrieval and analysis for new users; A self-learning tool for novice and infrequent users to supplement their knowledge of the NHANES database and the analysis techniques required to properly analyze this complex dataset; A reference for experienced researchers highlighting NHANES analytic nuances and sample program code. The first phase of the tutorial is now accessible. Some modules/sections are still incomplete, but will be posted on the NHANES website as soon as they are complete. The targeted completion date for the entire tutorial is January 2007.
