DISC Privacy Policy

This policy covers information collected by the Data and Information Services Center (DISC) web site, http://www.disc.wisc.edu/ and all related sub-pages.

Information Collected via Forms

The DISC web site collects information from users via forms at the time of dataset download, and when users complete a user survey giving feedback regarding the DISC web site. This information may include name, e-mail address, general affiliation (academic, business, non-profit), state and country.

User lists are neither sold nor distributed to third parties. The only third-party distribution is in cases of downloads of specified datasets when the principal investigator and/or survey staff has requested to be notified regarding data downloads. In each case, the user is clearly notified in advance that the information will be forwarded.

DISC does not employ user lists to send solicitations, but may use such lists to make announcements of changes or updates to datasets that users have downloaded.

Web Site Log Files

As is the case with most web sites, the DISC site does generate log files that show the IP address of the visitor, date, time, and pages visited. Aggregate reports are generated that do not contain personally identifiable information. The log files may also be used to safeguard DISC web security.

Cookies

The main DISC site does not use Internet cookies. DISC's BADGIR archive uses only session cookies, which record the user's login status and what BADGIR operations are used during the session. That information is cleared upon logout or the time-out of the session, and is neither retained nor used further.
