This recent article (http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2018/07/10/1800615115) published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences examined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grantees from 1991 to 2010 and found that only 31% of the principal investigators are women in the biomedical sciences.
