Economic Growth Center [Yale University] Working Paper: “Economics, Area Studies and Human Development,” by Gustav Ranis (No. 975, July 2009, .pdf format, 11p.).

Abstract:

This paper suggests that area studies and economics have a better chance to be married successfully if we shift our attention from the exclusive emphasis on economic growth towards improvements in human development, especially the much broadened version of that concept. Different areas are shown to differ substantially in terms of the choices they make among the various independent dimensions of well-being and the various indicators within each dimension. The particular characteristics of each area play an important role in determining the choices societies make and the extent to which they are constrained by their initial conditions.

California Center for Population Research [University of California-Los Angeles] Working Paper: “Take Me ‘Home’: Determinants of Return Migration Among Germany’s Elderly Immigrants,” by Jenjira Yahirun (CCPR-2009-019, July 2009, .pdf format, 44p.).

Abstract:

This paper examines the determinants of return migration as foreign-born individuals approach old age in Germany. Return migration in later life engages a different set of conditions than return migration earlier on, including framing return as a possible retirement strategy. Using data from the German Socioeconomic Panel, results suggest that later-life emigrants are “negatively selected” on the basis of economic resources. However, family resources such as spousal characteristics and ties to kin in “home” and “host” countries also shape decisions to return. Results from this paper highlight the broader importance of framing return migration within the processes of international migration and immigrant incorporation.

Institute of Economic Growth [University of Dehli] Working Paper: “Association Between Marital Status And Health: Examining The Role Of Age And Gender,” by Manoj K. Pandey (Discussion Paper No. 140, July 2009, pdf format, 23p).

Abstract:

The paper examines the association between marital status and self-reported health status of Indian adults. A nationally representative cross-sectional data surveyed by NSSO in 2004 is used. Results confirm linkages between marital status and health and show that this relationship is sensitive to the age and gender. Based on findings, the paper argues that the implication of marital status on health could be different for adults of different age group and gender.

California Center for Population Research [University of California-Los Angeles] Working Paper: “The Effect of Husbands’ and Wives’ Fertility Preferences on the Likelihood of a Subsequent Pregnancy, Bangladesh 1998-2003,” by Jessica D. Gipson and Michelle J. Hindin (CCPR-2009-018, July 2009, .pdf format, 14p.).

Abstract:

Using cross-sectional and longitudinal data from 3,052 rural Bangladeshi couples, we investigated the influence of husbands’ and wives’ fertility preferences on the likelihood of a subsequent pregnancy in the period 1998-2003. Although reproductive behaviour is relatively consistent with fertility preferences, 17 per cent of couples who reported they did not want more children in 1998 had a subsequent pregnancy by 2003. Wives in this setting appear to be more pronatalist than those in other less developed countries. Moreover, wives’ rather than husbands’ fertility preferences appear to have dominated over the 5-year study period. As expected, the incidence of pregnancy decreased over the study period for most couples, but increased among couples in which only the husband wanted more children. This finding suggests that wives who disagree with their husbands about having more children are either less likely to prevent pregnancy through consistent use of contraception or acquiesce to their husbands’ desire for more children.
