Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research Working Paper: “Birth cohort overlays of changing childbearing patterns: a unique proximate fertility determinant with unexpected tempo effects,” by Tomas Frejka (WP-2010-026, June 2010, .pdf format, 43p.).

Abstract:

Effects of the overlap of changing cohort childbearing patterns of successive cohorts on total period fertility rates (TPFRs) are the focus of this paper. Changing childbearing age patterns in conjunction with the overlay of successive birth cohorts function as a proximate determinant of fertility, which is a unique proximate determinant because it is shaped not only by societal factors but because changes in childbearing patterns are shaped also by effects of the ‘traditional’ proximate determinants. In low-fertility populations period fertility declines, troughs and increases are predominantly due to childbearing postponement combined with overlays of successive birth cohorts. Early in the 21st century TPFRs were increasing in low-fertility populations because delayed births of older cohorts were being recuperated, whereas fertility of young women in overlapping younger cohorts was low. In the West this was due to abating childbearing postponement, elsewhere the previously delayed births stemmed from the first postponement wave.

Center for Family and Demographic Research [Bowling Green University] Working Paper: “Parent-Child Relations and Offending During Young Adulthood,” by Wendi L. Johnson, Peggy C. Giordano, Wendy D. Manning, and Monica A. Longmore (WP 2010-05, June 2010, .pdf format, 28p.).

Abstract:

There is a long tradition of studying the association between parent-child relations and adolescent delinquency. However, the association between parent-child relations and criminal offending during young adulthood is less well understood. Although the developmental tasks of young adulthood tend to focus on intimate relationships, employment, and family formation, the parent-child bond persists over the life course and likely continues to inform and shape behavior beyond adolescence. Using data from the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS),we investigate the influence of parental involvement on patterns of offending among respondents interviewed first as adolescents and later as young adults is examined. The influence of both early and later in the life course parenting factors such as support, monitoring and conflict on young adults’ criminal are examined. Results show that early monitoring and ongoing parental support are associated with lower offending in young adulthood. These effects persist net of peer influence and prior delinquency. This suggests the importance of examining multiple ways in which parental resources and support influence early adult behavior and well-being.

A. “The Double-Edged Sword: Financial Source Of Household Healthcare Expenditure In Ghana,” by Henry A. Tagoe (Working Paper No. 10-04, May 2010, .pdf format, 18p.).

Abstract
In many regions, some of the most formidable enemies of health are joining forces with the allies of poverty to impose a double burden of disease, disability and premature death in many societies. This paper takes a look at the main financial sources used by household to finance household healthcare. It examines the spatial and socio-economic dynamics and the challenges this poses to health and development. Data from the Ghana 2003 World Health Survey (WHS) are analyzed descriptively. Approximately 40% of households depend on more than one financial source with 88% depending on household income to finance household healthcare expenditure. The high dependency on household income will erode gains in the economic and health sector in the midst of global economic recession. Comprehensive reforms with national health insurance program that covers emerging disease conditions will mitigate the strain of the double burden of disease on households in emerging economies.

B. “Education and Population Health: A Reassessment,” by David Baker, Juan Leon, Emily Grace Smith and John Collins (Working Paper No. 10-03, April 2010, .pdf format, 28p.).

Abstract:

Within demographic research are numerous reports of consistent and significant associations between formal education attainment and a range of health risks such as smoking, drug abuse, accidents, the contraction of many diseases, and health outcomes such as mortality – almost all indicating the same conclusion: More educated individuals are healthier and live longer. The substantial number of studies reporting a robust education effect along with a weak appreciation of its role as a causal agent leads to confusion about the independent influence of formal schooling. To address the underappreciated effect of education on mortality, three contributions are provided: 1) a macro-level summary of the dimensions of the worldwide educational revolution and a reassessment of its role in macro-level demographic health transitions; 2) a meta-analysis of methodologically- sophisticated studies of the effect of educational attainment on all- cause mortality to establish the independence and robustness of the education effect on health ; and, 3) an improved hypothesis about how education is a powerful determinant of health in light of new multidisciplinary cognitive research.

Federal Trade Commission, Bureau of Economics Working Paper: “Edgeworth Price Cycles in Gasoline: Evidence from the U.S.,” by Paul Zimmerman, John M. Yun and Christopher T. Taylor (Working Paper No. 303, June 2010, .pdf format, 27p.).

Abstract:

Studies of gasoline prices in multiple countries have found a repeated sequence of asymmetric cycles where a sharp price increase is followed by gradual decreases. This price pattern is linked to Maskin & Tirole’s (1988) theoretical duopoly pricing game that produces a similar pattern, Edgeworth price cycles. We examine data on average daily city-level retail gasoline and diesel prices for 355 cities in the U.S. from 2001-2007 using multiple methods to identify price cycles. We show that a relatively small number of U.S. cities concentrated in a number of contiguous upper Midwestern states evidence Edgeworth cycle-like pricing behavior. Within our data set cities tend to either cycle in all years or they do not cycle at all. We examine prices in cycling and non-cycling cites controlling for other factors and find consumers are no worse off, and likely better off, on average, in cycling than non-cycling cities. Finally, unlike previous studies, we find that some vertically integrated (branded) retail gasoline stations are themselves potentially important drivers of the scale and scope of cycling in retail gasoline prices.

Federal Trade Commission, Bureau of Economics Working Paper: “Edgeworth Price Cycles in Gasoline: Evidence from the U.S.,” by Paul Zimmerman, John M. Yun and Christopher T. Taylor (Working Paper No. 3030, June 2010, .pdf format, 27p.).
