Minnesota Population Center Data Extractor: “Integrated Health Interview Series: Harmonized data and documentation for the U.S. National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)” (2010). “The Integrated Health Interview Series (IHIS) has recently released 4000 new harmonized variables from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 1969 to 2009.  Funded by NIH and carried out at the Minnesota Population Center, the IHIS project is designed to make it easier for researchers to access and use multiple years of U.S. national survey data on health status, health behaviors, and health care by consistently coding and fully documenting variables across time. IHIS data are disseminated for free through a Web-based extraction system that allows researchers to create a customized file with only the years and variables they need. Recently added topic areas include survivorship of survey respondents, child and adult mental health, cancer family history, adult physical activity, and use of complementary and alternative medicine by children and adults.” Note: free registration is required before data can be extracted.

A. “Yearning, Learning and Conceding: (Some of) the Reasons People Change their Childbearing Intentions,” by Maria Iacovou and Lara Patrício Tavares (Research Paper No. 3, 2010, .pdf format, 54p.).

Abstract:

People’s childbearing intentions change over their lives. These changes are sometimes conceptualised as a response to constraints such as the biological clock or lack of a partner. However, we find that they are influenced by a much wider range of factors: social norms; adaptation to the wishes of a partner; re-partnering; and learning about the costs and benefits of parenthood. In a departure from existing studies we analyse increases in planned fertility separately from decreases; we conclude that the determinants of increases in planned fertility are not simply equal and opposite to the determinants of decreases.

B. “Effect of Migration on Population Size and Age Composition in Europe,” by Dimiter Philipov and Julia Schuster (Research Paper No. 2, 2010, .pdf format, 91p.).

This paper presents the impact of cumulated net migration on population size and age composition in 21 member countries of the European Union. The impact depends significantly on the definition of the population consisting of immigrants and their descendants. We apply two
methods: one based on the survival of birth cohorts to around 2007 closed to migration, and one based on a projection of the population observed between 1960 and 2007, again closed to migration. The populations in 2007 are compared with the observed population, and the difference forms the migration surplus – population size attributed to accumulated net migration. We find that populations in Spain, France, Austria and Germany have grown considerably, while those of Portugal and Bulgaria have declined as a result of migration. Change in population size is moderate in several countries mainly from Central Europe. The methods are used to compare changes in population size over time. Southern European countries along with Ireland are found to have experienced a decline in population size as a result of net migration until recently, while during the last decade they have gained population, i.e. they turned from emigration to immigration countries. The appendices provide detailed information which can be used for deeper country-specific and comparative analyses.

C. “Life Expectancy in Developed Countries Is Higher Than Conventionally Estimated. Implications from Improved Measurement of Human Longevity,” by Dalkhat M. Ediev (Research Paper No. 1, 2010, .pdf format, 35p.).

Abstract:

Conventional indicators of human lifespan (Graunt 1661; Chiang 1984) are based on a hypothetical synthesis of the mortality conditions of different cohorts with (as yet) incomplete life histories. There is a considerable ongoing debate about improvements to the traditional methodology under changing mortality rates (Bongaarts and Feeney 2002; Wilmoth 2005; Barbi et al. 2008). Improved measurement of the human lifespan is crucial for estimating prospects of longevity (Wilmoth 1998; Tuljapurkar et al. 2000; Oeppen and Vaupel 2002; Robine et al. 2006; Olshansky et al. 2009) and for understanding the implications of population ageing (Olshansky et al. 2009; Sanderson and Scherbov 2005; Lutz et al. 2008; Council of the European Union 2009). Here we show that both the centuries-long tradition of conventional lifespan indicators and the more recent criticism of them ignore the true exposures of individuals to prevailing mortality levels. These exposures form a genuine part of a more comprehensive picture of the prevailing mortality conditions. In low mortality countries, our estimated duration of human life is about 95 years, which exceeds the conventional estimates by 15 years. This difference is crucial for health care, long-term care and pension systems. Our theory implies that mortality dynamics are characterised by considerable inertia. This is used to develop new effective methods of forecasting, leading to a more optimistic outlook for future mortality. Even if there were no further change in mortality conditions, conventional life expectancy at birth will rise to 90 years by 2050, while the probability to survive beyond age 100 will reach 30% in low-mortality countries. Conventional longevity indicators still provide a useful summary of the observed mortality rates which, in turn, are essential for population projections. However, they do not give the full picture of current mortality conditions and mislead about the prospects of human longevity.
