Abstract:

We study how nonlisted firms trade off financial, real, and distributive uses of cash. We show that firms’ marginal value of cash (MVC) affects the mix of external and internal finance used to absorb fluctuations in cash flows; in particular, high-MVC firms employ substantially more external finance on the margin. Linking firms to their main bank, we find that shocks to bank finance affect firms’ trade-offs and have real effects in high-MVC firms, making investment more sensitive to firm cash flow. Our analysis suggests that shocks to external financing costs are transmitted to the real economy via firms’ marginal value of cash.

Center for the Study of Economy and Society [Cornell University] Working Papers:

A. “The Household Economy: A Complement or Alternative to the Market Economy?” by Richard Swedberg (No. 58, 2011, .pdf format, 39p.).

Abstract:

The most common way of understanding economic life today is by looking at it in terms of the market. The market, it is generally agreed, is at the heart of the modern economy and is best understood with the help of the science of economics. In this paper I argue that it may also be possible to look at economic life from the perspective of another and equally important institution in economic life: the household. Three examples of households and their respective theoretization are presented and discussed: the estate in Ancient Greece and the theory of the oikos; the household in 19th century USA and home economics; and the modern household and Ellickson’s transaction cost approach to the household. The paper ends with a discussion of the household form, drawing on Weber’s conceptualization of the household in his economic sociology; and also with some suggestions for how to use the household model to improve economic life.

B. “The Role of the Senses and Signs in the Economy: More on the Centrality of Materiality,” by Richard Swedberg (No. 56, 2011, .pdf format, 44p.).

Abstract:

This paper suggests that the sociological analysis of economic life may be improved by drawing on the theory of signs as developed by philosopher Charles Peirce. I take my point of departure from Georg Simmel’s essay “Sociology of the Senses” (1907) and raise the question if an economic sociology of the senses is possible and, if so, what it would look like. The different ways in which the senses are used in consumption and production are discussed. It is also argued that one can improve on Simmel’s notion of the way that social structure and the senses interact by drawing on the theory of signs in the work of Peirce. Especially three qualities of his semiotic are singled out as being particularly helpful: that the signs constitute an autonomous level, besides those of object and subject; that the actor simultaneously perceives the object and its sign; and that the object determines the sign (not the other way around, as is
common in sociology).

Population Council Working Paper: “National efforts toward FGM-free villages in Egypt: The evidence of impact,” by Ghada Barsoum, Nadia Rifaat, Omaima El-Gibaly, Nihal Elwan, and Natalie Forcier (Poverty, Gender, and Youth Working Papers No. 22, 2011, .pdf format, 38p.).

Abstract:

This report is a midterm evaluation and documentation of the process and approach of the FGMFree Village Model implemented in Egypt. The report focuses on the impact of the intervention on communities. In a comparison of responses from women and men in intervention groups to those in nonintervention (control) villages, data analysis shows that the program has been successful in changing views and attitudes toward female genital mutilation (FGM). Respondents in both intervention and control groups reported receiving information about FGM from the media, particularly from television. More than 78 percent of women in the intervention group retained the information that FGM has negative health consequences, whereas only 30 percent of women in the control group retained the same information. Moreover, in terms of the impact of information on decisions and attitudes toward FGM, 81 percent of women in the intervention group stated that the information they had received made them reevaluate their views concerning circumcision of girls, compared with only 17 percent of women in the control group who responded in the same way. In addition, 76 percent of women in the intervention group who received information and whose daughters were uncircumcised stated that the information convinced them not to circumcise their daughters, whereas only 19 percent of women in similar situations in the control sample had the same response. Similarly, support for the continuation of the
practice varied significantly between the intervention and control groups. Only 27 percent of women in the intervention group believed that the practice of FGM should continue, while 77 percent of women in the control group believed the same. Finally, women in the intervention group were six times less likely than women in the control group to plan to circumcise their daughters (38 percent of women in intervention groups noted that they would not circumcise their daughters, compared with only 7 percent of women in the control group). FGM is an entrenched generational practice, and eradicating it in a community requires concerted effort over an extended period of time. This evaluation strongly recommends that efforts be continued by means of a sustained and protracted process. Advocacy and
awareness-raising efforts that take a holistic multisectoral approach constitute best practices that must to be sustained in order to maintain their impact for future generations.
