Center for the Study of Economy and Society [Cornell University] Working Paper: “Husbands’ Housework Sharing Behavior in Japan: Field Experiments on Identity and Gender Display,” by Jun Ando (Working Paper No. 59, 2011, .pdf format, 17p.).

Abstract:

Identity economics claims that identity affects economic behavior of self and others. Gender display in housework sharing can be thought as one of the examples. In this paper, two way ANOVA and multiple comparisons are employed using original data from the field experiments on identity and gender display in the social research conducted in 2008 in Japan. The results show that more or less, Japanese husbands are likely to show gender display when their work time share is extremely small, and that partly it can be thought attributed to husbands’ and wives’ losses in identity and could be explained by wives’ rather than husbands’.

Center for Family and Demographic Research [Bowling Green State University] Working Paper: “HIV Testing among Heterosexual Young Adults: The Influence of Individual Attitudes and Behaviors, Partner’s Risk-Taking and Relationship Dynamics,” by Monica A. Longmore, Wendi L. Johnson, Wendy D. Manning, and Peggy C. Giordano (Working Paper No. 2011-04, April 2011, .pdf format, 45p.).

Abstract:

This study relies on survey (N=704) and in-depth qualitative (N = 100) interviews (Toledo Adolescent Relationship Study) to examine individual, partner, and relationship barriers and facilitators to HIV testing in a sample of young adults. Consistent with the public health goal of routine testing, nearly 40% of respondents had an HIV test within the context of their current sexual relationship, and women were significantly more likely to have tested within the current relationship than were men. For women, it was both their own risky behavior, and the partners’ characteristics and related relationship dynamics that distinguished testers from non-testers. In contrast, for men their own risky behavior was the most salient factor influencing their odds of being tested. These results showcase gender specific approaches to best promote sexual health, i.e., routine HIV testing among young adults.

Program on the Global Demography on Aging [Harvard University] Working Paper: “The Effect of Vaccination on Children’s Physical and Cognitive Development in the Philippines,” by David E. Bloom, David Canning, and Erica Seiguer (PGDA Working Paper No. 69, March 2011, .pdf format, 16p.).

Summary:

We use data from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey in the Philippines to link vaccination in the first two years of life with later physical and cognitive development in children. We use propensity score matching to estimate the causal effect of vaccination on child development. We find no effect of vaccination on later height or weight, but full childhood vaccination for measles, polio, TB, and DPT significantly increases cognitive test scores relative to matched children who received no vaccinations. The size of the effect is large, raising test scores, on average, by about half a standard deviation.

Institute of Behavioral Science [University of Colorado] Working Paper: “Redefining Migration: Gender and Temporary Labor Migration in South Africa,” by Jill Williams, Gayatri Singh, Benjamin Clark, and Mark Collinson (POP2011-04, April 2011, .pdf format, 19p.).

Abstract:

We use data from the Agincourt Demographic and Health Surveillance System in rural South Africa to investigate sex differences in temporary labor migration from 1992-2006. Using a gendered lens we first redefine temporary labor migration to allow for sex differences in labor and residency pattern. Changing the definition of temporary labor migration increases the incidence of temporary labor migration and clarifies sex differences in the recent circular migration trends in South Africa. We then examine sex differences in migration transitions and find that adult women have a much higher transition rate than adult men. Finally, we conduct a survival analysis of temporary labor migrations that demonstrate a lower survival function and higher hazard function for women’s temporary labor migrations. These findings suggest that women’s temporary labor migrations are more tenuous than men’s and that more research is needed to find out how men and women’s labor migrations are differentially related to household livelihood strategies in rural South Africa.

It lists more than 2,000 resources in 97 sections and sub-sections available on the Internet of interest to academic and practicing economists, and those interested in economics. Almost all resources are also described. In selecting resources for RFE, I exercise some editorial judgment and select items that either offer a substantial amount of information, or are specialized to a given area.”

Center for Research on Child Well-Being [Princeton University] Working Paper: “Maternal Partnership Instability and Coparenting among Fragile Families,” by Carey Cooper, Audrey Beck, and Robin Hognas (Working Paper WP11-06-FF, April 2011, .pdf format, 30p.).

Abstract:

Data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 2,725) are used to examine associations between mothers’ partnership instability and coparenting over the first five years after a nonmarital birth, differences between coresidential and nonresident, dating transitions and variation by maternal race and child gender. Both coresidential and dating transitions are significantly associated with lower quality coparenting at child age 5, but the association is stronger for coresidential transitions than dating transitions. The negative association between coresidential transitions and coparenting quality is stronger for White parents than for Black parents and for mothers of sons than for mothers of daughters. Robustness checks suggest that at least part of these associations is causal. Implications for parenting and child well-being in the context of Fragile Families are discussed.
