B. “Longitudinal Aging Study in India: Vision, Design, Implementation, and Some Early Results,” by P. Arokiasamy, D. Bloom, J. Lee, K. Feeney, and M. Ozolins (PGDA Working Paper No. 82, Novmeber 2011, .pdf format, 43p.).

Abstract:

India is poised to experience a dramatic rise in its aging population in coming decades, yet comprehensive research and effective policy to confront this transition are lacking. According to projections constructed by the United Nations Population Division, the share of Indians aged 60 and over will increase from 8% today to 19% by 2050 (representing 323 million people, more than the entire US population in 2011). This demographic shift will pose significant challenges. India’s traditional reliance on private family networks to provide older people with care, companionship, and financial support will be stressed not only by the increasing number of aging Indians who rely on it, but also by changing household dynamics and patterns of spatial mobility among younger family members.

The Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) is intended to inform the design and expansion of a new generation of institutions – public and private – for the care and support of India’s population of older people by providing comprehensive data to the scientific and policy community. LASI is an evidence base for analyzing the (1) health, (2) economic and financial resources, and (3) living arrangements and social connections of older Indians. It enhances opportunities for cross-national analysis by adding India to the growing number of countries with harmonized data on their older populations. LASI surveys will be carried out every two years, providing longitudinal data to support research and policy development.

This paper provides an overview of the conception and content of the 2010 LASI pilot survey that was conducted in four states: Punjab, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Kerala. We highlight key aspects of the field work, such as response rates and interview duration, and discuss the breadth and quality of the economic, health, and social data collected. We pay close attention to the cultural and geographic diversity LASI is able to capture, and bring to light interesting patterns in, and relationships among, measures of health, social connectedness, labor force participation, and hardship among the elderly.

C. “The Effect of Childhood Measles Vaccination on School Enrollment in Matlab, Bangladesh,” by Julia Driessen, Abdur Razzaque, Damian Walker, and David Canning (PGDA Working Paper No. 81, Novmeber 2011, .pdf format, 42p.).

Abstract:

There is increasing evidence that early childhood health interventions have long term effects on cognitive development, educational achievement, and adult productivity. We examine the effect of measles vaccination on the school enrollment of children in Matlab, Bangladesh. An intensive measles vaccination program was introduced in two areas of Matlab in 1982, and extended to two more areas in 1985. Using this staggered rollout as an instrument for vaccination, we find that age appropriate vaccination raises the probability that a boy has enrolled in school by 9.5 percentage points but appears to have no effect on girls’ enrollment.

Institute of Behavioral Science [University of Colorado] Working Paper: “Racial, Socioeconomic, and Religious Influences on School-Level Teen Pregnancy Norms and Behaviors,” by Stephanie Mollborn, Benjamin W. Domingue, and Jason D. Boardman (POP2011-12, November 2011, .pdf format, 25p.).

Abstract:

We used the school-based design of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to measure normative climates regarding teen pregnancy across high schools in the United States. We characterized norms by both the average level of embarrassment and the consensus about embarrassment regarding teen pregnancy among students within 75 high schools. The average and consensus of embarrassment regarding pregnancy were strongly (r = -0.65) and moderately (r = 0.34) associated with pregnancy rates within the schools, respectively. We also documented differences in norm strength and consensus, as well as school pregnancy rates, by racial and socioeconomic composition and socioeconomic inequality. The proportion of students believing their religion’s scripture is the word of god predicted higher school pregnancy rates but was not associated with norms. Normative climate accounted for half of the observed racial differences in school pregnancy rates, but norms were a stronger predictor than racial composition.

University of Wisconsin Center for Demography and Ecology Working Paper: “The Effects of Grandparents on Children’s Schooling: Evidence from Rural China,” by Zhen Zeng and Yu Xie (CDE Working Paper No. 2011-11, November 2011, .pdf format, 32p.).

Abstract:

Past studies of intergenerational mobility in the U.S. have found that the influence of grandparents on their grandchildren’s socioeconomic outcomes is completely mediated through the middle generation. Drawing on data from the 2002 Chinese Household Income Project, we investigate the direct effects of grandparents on grandchildren’s educational attainment in rural China. The results show that the U.S. pattern does not apply to China, primarily due to the high prevalence of multigenerational coresidence in China. We find that the educational level of coresident grandparents directly affects the educational attainment of their grandchildren, with an effect size equivalent to that of parental education. In contrast, the education of non-coresident and deceased grandparents does not have any effect. These findings lead to the conclusion that coresidence is a critical condition for grandparents’ influences on grandchildren. Thus, the finding of no direct effect of grandparents in the prior literature may be attributable to a low rate of multigenerational coresidence in the U.S.

Harvard University School of Public Health Center for Population and Development Studies Bell Fellowships: Application deadline is Dec. 2, 2011. “The Bell Fellowship Program provides opportunities for research and leadership training in a flexible, 1 or 2 year non-degree program for researchers and practitioners in the field of population and development. Selected candidates possess a strong record of academic training, a commitment to population and development work, the demonstrated ability to work independently, and leadership potential.

Bell Fellows examine a broad range of critical issues in the field of population and development studies from multidisciplinary perspectives. Most will have interests that match the HCPDS’s focal areas: social and environmental determinants of population health; migration and immigration; causes and consequences of health transitions (aging societies); and health consequences of work place policies and work design. The wide range of perspectives will enhance the fellows’ experiences and broaden the community life at the Center.”
