A. “Social Participation and Hours Worked,” by Stefano Bartolini and Ennio Bilancini (Working Paper No. 2011-64, December 2011, .pdf format, 21p.).

Abstract:

We investigate the relationship between social participation and the hours worked in the market. Social participation is the component of social capital that measures individuals’ engagement in groups, associations and non-governmental organizations. We provide a model of consumer choice where social participation may be either a substitute or a complement to material consumption – depending on whether participation is instrumentally or non-instrumentally motivated – and where a local environment with greater social participation increases the return to individual participation. We carry out an empirical investigation of this framework using survey data on United States for the period 1972-2004. We find that non-instrumental social participation substantially decreases the hours worked, while instrumental social participation substantially increases them. Moreover, evidence is consistent with the idea that a local environment with greater social participation fosters individual social participation.

B. “Luxembourg and France: Comparable Family Benefits, Comparable Fertility Levels?” by Anne Reinstadler (Working Paper No. 2011-65, December 2011, .pdf format, 22p.).

Abstract:

The economic theory of the family as proposed by Becker (1981, 1991) predicts clearly the relationship between income (especially the mother’s income) and fertility. Indeed, it assesses that an income effect and a substitution effect could coexist, whose net impact is thus to be determined empirically. Many authors have already attempted to do so, some interested in the effect of the woman’s wage on fertility, others focusing on the effect of some family policy measures on the decision to have a first child. Our own analysis is situated in this latter framework. Using the Luxembourgish sample of the EU-SILC data, we estimate the effect observed in the Grand-Duchy and compare the result with those obtained in France, a country with quite similar family policies.

Institute of Behavioral Science [University of Colorado] Working Paper: “Unhealthy parents delay college graduation for their children,” by Jason D. Boardman, Kari B. Alexander, Richard Miech, Ross MacMillan, and Michael Shanahan (POP2011-13, November 2011, .pdf format, 30p.).

Abstract:

While the intergenerational relationship between SES and health has been a staple of sociological and epidemiological research, there have been few attempts to understand the potential impact of parents’ health on the SES of children in later life. To address this gap, we use four waves of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to examine the association between parent’s health and the educational attainment of their children. We show that young adults whose parents were in poor health during their middle/high school years are significantly less likely to attend or graduate from college and significantly more likely to drop out of high school compared to those whose parents were in relatively good health. We test several different models to explain this association and we show that much of this association operates indirectly through the health and health behaviors of the child. However, after adjusting for a range of different intervening variables, we continue to show a fairly large and robust influence of parental health on the educational outcomes of their children. These findings partially support the health selection model and they illustrate both the complexity and significance of the health-SES association.
