Vienna Institute of Demography Working Paper: “Towards a Catholic North America? Projections of Religion in Canada and the US Beyond the Mid-21st Century,” by Anne Goujon, Éric Caron Malenfant, and Vegard Skirbekk (VID Working Paper No. 03/2012, April 2012, .pdf format, 29p.).

Abstract:

Religion and religiosity are important identity markers, and changes in a country’s religious composition may affect its culture, value orientations and policies. In recent decades the Protestants in both the US and Canada have lost their absolute population majority. In the present study we investigate the future of the religious composition in both the US and Canada jointly until the 2060s taking into consideration changes due to demographic forces, the level and composition of migration, fertility differentials and intergenerational religious transmissions. The joint focus on both the US and Canada allows one to better understand the commonalities and differences between these two nations which are tightly knit in terms of geography, politics, economics and culture. The projections reveal that North America should not become Catholic by mid-century but close to, with an increasing importance of minorities in the religious landscape.

Center for Family and Demographic Research [Bowling Green State University] Working Paper: “Father Involvement and Mothers’ Parenting Stress: The Role of Relationship Status,” by Kei Nomaguchi, Susan L. Brown, and Tanya M. Leyman (2012-08, April 2012, .pdf format, 37p.).

Abstract:

Although the salutatory effects of father involvement on child well-being are well established, whether similar benefits accrue to children’s mothers is unknown. The prevailing cultural ideal of involved fathering coupled with the growing complexity of mother-father relationship contexts signal that an examination of how father involvement shapes mothers’ parenting stress is overdue. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Well-being Study (N = 2,480) , we find father involvement is related to lower parenting stress for mothers who are married to, cohabiting with, or dating the child’s father, but not for mothers who are no longer romantically involved with the father. For mothers living with a new partner, the current partner’s, not the biological father’s, involvement is related to less parenting stress. Results support the notion that the stress buffering effectiveness of social support, conceptualized here as father involvement, depends on the relationship context between support recipients and providers.

Vienna Institute of Demography Working Papers:

A. “Family Sizes in Europe: Evidence from the 2011 Eurobarometer Survey,” by Maria Rita Testa (European Demographic Research Papers 2, 2012, .pdf format, 100p.).

Abstract:

A major concern among many European policy makers in recent years has been the perception that a sizeable proportion of couples in low-fertility countries fail to realise their desired fertility. In this study, based on data from the 2011 Eurobarometer on Fertility and Social Climate, I examine different family size preferences and their link with actual fertility with the aim to see whether there is a correspondence between the number of children Europeans would like to have and the number they are actually having. The data reveal that around 30% of women and men end their reproductive career with fewer children than they previously considered ideal and that the difference between their mean ideal and actual family size is around 0.3 children. This measure can be higher in some countries, like
Italy, and in some social groups, like highly educated persons. The preference for a two-child family is still pervasive in Europe and it has even been growing in the EU-15 countries over the decade 2001-2011. This result holds true for Greece and Portugal as well, the two countries which showed a clear decline in their mean family size ideals over the past 5-year period (2006-2011). Social climate is rather negative in Europe. The most optimistic people about both their own life and their country’s socio-economic situation are, on the one hand, childless persons and, on the other, those who have or would like to have large families with three or more children. This result, which contains an intrinsic contradiction, needs to be studied more thoroughly in further research.

B. “Unskilled Mayors and Graduate Farmers-Educational Fertility Differentials by Occupational Status and Industry in Six European Countries,” by Bilal F. Barakat and Rachel E. Durham (European Demographic Research Papers 1, 2012, .pdf format, 40p.).

Abstract:

Understanding the relationship of education to fertility requires disentangling the potentially confounding effect of social status. We contribute to this aim by examining educational fertility differentials within occupational groups and industries across a broad swath of Central and Eastern Europe, specifically for Austria, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, and Switzerland. We use the recently-released individual-level census samples from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS). A key advantage of IPUMS is that samples are large enough to contain sizeable numbers of unusual combinations, e.g., university graduates in low-status jobs or primary school dropouts in professional categories. As an additional methodological contribution, we re-introduce to the field an alternative count model, that improves on the results of a Poisson regression by accounting for the considerable underdispersion in the data. Results show that education has a strong, direct, consistent association with fertility, net of industry and occupation, even within presumably ‘family-friendly’ industries. Furthermore, fertility by industry and occupation yielded fairly disparate patterns. We also find that differences in fertility across countries primarily reflect country-specific compositional differences in education, industry, and occupation and interaction effects.
