Center for Family and Demographic Research [Bowling Green State University] Working Paper: “Socioeconomic Variation in Reports of Fertility Behavior during the U.S. Economic Recession,” by Karen Benjamin Guzzo (2012-15, November 2012, .pdf format, 42p.).

Abstract:

Using two cross-sectional U.S. surveys taken during 2009, I examine individual fertility plans during the economic recession. While those who experienced direct financial strain were most likely to report that the economy affected their fertility plans, the highly educated were most likely to have actually postponed a birth (and least likely to report feeling financially strained). The highly educated are more likely to plan to have children in the future, so it appears that the fertility decisions of highly educated individuals are less directly affected by the recession in the same manner as those with less education.

Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences [University of Washington] Working Paper: “Latent Demographic Profile Estimation in Hard-to-Reach Groups,” by Tyler McCormick and Tian Zheng (Working Paper No. 125, 2012, .pdf format, 20p.).

Abstract:

The sampling frame in most social science surveys excludes members of certain groups, known as hard-to-reach groups. These groups, or subpopulations, may be be dicult to access (the homeless, for example), camouflaged by stigma (individuals with HIV/AIDS), or both (commercial sex workers). Even basic demographic information about these groups is typically unknown, especially in many developing nations. We present statistical models which leverage social network structure to estimate demographic characteristics of these subpopulations using Aggregated Relational Data (ARD), or questions of the form “How many X’s do you know?” Unlike other network-based techniques for reaching these groups, ARD require no special sampling strategy and are easily incorporated into standard surveys. ARD also do not require respondents to reveal their own group membership. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model for estimating the demographic characteristics of hard-to-reach groups, or latent demographic profiles, using ARD. We propose two estimation techniques. First, we propose a Markov-chain Monte Carlo algorithm for existing data or cases where the full posterior distribution is of interest. For cases when new data can be collected, we propose guidelines and, based on these guidelines, propose a simple estimate motivated by a missing data approach. Using data from McCarty et al. (2001), we estimate the age and gender profiles of six hard-to-reach groups, such as individuals who have HIV, women who were raped, and homeless persons. We also evaluate our simple estimates using simulation studies.

A. “Does grandparenting pay off? The effect of childcare on grandparents’ cognitive functioning,” by Bruno Arpino and Valeria Bordone (European Demographic Research Papers 4, 2012, .pdf format, 45p.).

Abstract:

In ageing societies, it is crucial to study the factors that can help maintain good cognitive functioning in later life. Previous studies have shown that having an engaged life (e.g., being employed or involved in social activities) has a positive effect on cognitive performance. In line with this strand of the literature, we consider the provision of grandparental childcare as a way to remain active in later life. Therefore, following the use-it-or-lose-it theoretical framework, we hypothesise that providing childcare on a daily basis can help older adults maintain better cognitive functioning. In particular, we focus on grandmothers, as they are the most engaged in childcare. Contrary to our hypothesis, descriptive evidence from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) suggests that grandmothers who look after their grandchildren daily have lower cognitive scores than grandmothers who provide care less frequently. However, we show that this negative effect of providing childcare is attributable to the background characteristics of the grandparents. Using an instrumental variable approach to address the endogeneity of grandparental childcare, we find that providing childcare has a substantial and positive effect on one of the four cognitive tests we consider, verbal fluency. This positive effect is particularly strong for older grandmothers. For the other tests of cognitive functioning, no statistically significant effect of grandparental childcare is found. These results contribute to the limited evidence on the effects of grandparenting on grandparents’ outcomes.

B. “Women’s fertility intentions and level of education: why are they positively correlated in Europe?” by Maria Rita Testa (European Demographic Research Papers 3, 2012, .pdf format, 48p.).

Abstract:

Increasing shares of European women are making large investments in their human capital. Whether and to what extent these investments are in conflict with reproductive behavior are issues that have repercussions for fertility levels. Using the most recent Eurobarometer data (2011) on individuals clustered in the 27 EU countries, I investigate the relationship between women’s education and lifetime fertility intentions. The main hypothesis is that the two variables are positively correlated in countries in which the higher price paid by highly educated women for raising children is more than counterbalanced by the country’s provision of childcare services, gender-egalitarian system, and favourable economic conditions. Results suggest that a positive association between women’s level of education and lifetime fertility intentions exists at both the individual and country levels, as well as in a micro-macro integrated framework. This association is, however, not responsive to country differences in terms of childcare services, gender equality, and economic conditions. The main explanation for these findings-which remains to be proven by future research-is that, when policies and institutional contexts allow highly educated women to have larger families, women of reproductive ages are more prone to make investments in both human capital and family size, because these choices are not seen as incompatible alternatives.

Center for Health and Wellbeing [Princeton University] Working Paper: “Consequences of the expansion of employer sponsored┬áhealth insurance to dependent young adults,” by David Jason and Gershkoff Slusky (October 2012, .pdf format, 61p.).

Abstract:

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 mandates that young adults be able to stay on parental health insurance until age 26. This paper creates a new algorithm to identify individuals with parental health insurance. Using an age/time difference-in-difference analysis, it finds that this federal mandate increased insurance coverage by 3-4 percentage points. Parental insurance rose by 7-9 percentage points, but own coverage fell by 4-5 percentage points. The mandate also caused substitution from full-time to part-time work and from four-year private to two-year public colleges. Treated young adults were also 2-3 percentage points more likely to have a personal doctor and 1-2 percentage points less likely to have forgone care due to cost, and their households spent an average of $45-$60 per three months less on health insurance.
