University of Wisconsin Center for Demography and Ecology Working Paper: “Mismatch and the Paternalistic Justification for Selective College Admissions,” by Michael Kurlaender and Eric Grodsky (Working Paper No. 2013-06, May 2013, .pdf format, 33p.).

Abstract:

Although some scholars report that all students are better served by attending more prestigious postsecondary institutions, others have argued that students are better off attending colleges where they are about average in terms of academic ability and suffer worse outcomes if they attend a school “out of their league” at which they are “overmatched.” The latter argument is most frequently deployed as a paternalistic justification for ending affirmative action. We take advantage of a natural admissions experiment at the University of California to test the effect of being overmatched for students on the margin of admission to elite universities. Consistent with the mismatch hypothesis, we find that students accumulate more credits when they attend a less demanding institution. However, students do not earn higher grades and are no more or less likely to drop out of a school where they are overmatched, and are less likely to drop out than they would have been had they attended a less demanding institution.

C. “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Data System” (Updated June 2013, Microsoft Excel format, with selected interactive maps). “This data set provides time-series data on State- and county-level estimates of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation and benefit levels, combined with area estimates of total population, the number of persons in poverty, and selected socio-demographic characteristics of the population. All data, except program benefit amounts, are for a selected point in time each year; program benefit levels are total benefits issued over the course of a calendar year. The most recent year of full data availability is 2012 for State-level SNAP participation and benefits, 2010 for county-level SNAP participation, and 2010 for county-level SNAP benefits. More recent information for SNAP participation and benefits is available for selected counties.”

D.”U.S. Bioenergy Statistics” (Updated Jun. 2013, Microsoft Excel Format). “Society has just begun to tap new renewable sources of energy from agriculture and forestlands on a commercial scale that impacts energy markets.  Among these sources are biofuels, a small but important component of current fuel consumption in the U.S. transport sector.  In 2012, biofuels accounted for roughly 7.1 percent of total transport fuel consumption, or 13.8 billion gallons, unchanged from the previous year.  Ethanol, made mostly from corn starch from kernels, is by far the most significant biofuel in the United States, accounting for 94 percent of all biofuel production in 2012.  Most of the remainder is biodiesel, which is made from vegetable oils (chiefly soy oil) as well as animal fats, waste oils, and greases.

The U.S. Bioenergy Statistics are a source of information on biofuels intended to present a picture of the renewable energy industry and its relationship to agriculture.  Where appropriate, data are presented in both a calendar year and the relevant marketing year timeframe to increase utility to feedstock-oriented users.  The statistics highlight the factors that influence the demand for agricultural feedstocks for biofuels production; for instance, numerous tables emphasize the relationship between energy and commodity markets.

ERS analysts track U.S. ethanol and biodiesel production, consumption, and trade. They also monitor and analyze U.S. bioenergy policy and events that affect the domestic and international biofuel and feedstock markets.  Additional tables will be added as new series become available.
