Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences Working Papers:

A. “Latent Space Models for Multiview Network Data,” by Michael Salter-Townshend and Tyler McCormick (Working Paper No. 139, December 2013, .pdf format, 30p.).

Abstract:

Social relationships consist of interactions along multiple dimensions. In social networks, this means that individuals form multiple types of relationships with the same person (an individual will not trust all of his/her acquaintances, for example). Statistical models for these data require understanding two related types of dependence structure: (i) structure within each relationship type, or network view, and (ii) the association between views. In this paper we propose a statistical framework that parsimoniously represents dependence between relationship types while also maintaining enough flexibility to allow individuals to serve different roles in different relationship types. Our approach builds on work on latent space models for networks (see Hoff et al. (2002), for example). These models represent the propensity for two individuals to form edges as conditionally independent given the distance between the individuals in an unobserved social space. Our work departs from previous work in this area by representing dependence structure between network views through a Multivariate Bernoulli likelihood, providing a parsimonious representation of between-view association. Using our method, we explore multiview network structure across 75 villages in rural southern Karnataka, India (Banerjee et al., 2013).

B. “Bayesian Reconstruction of Two-Sex Populations by Age: Estimating Sex Ratios at Birth and Sex Ratios of Mortality,” by
Mark C. Wheldon, Adrian E. Raftery, Samuel J. Clark, and Patrick Gerland (Working Paper No. 138, December 2013, .pdf format, 50p.).

Abstract:

The original version of Bayesian reconstruction (Wheldon et al., 2013b), a method for estimating age-specific fertility, mortality, migration and population counts of the recent past with uncertainty, produced estimates for female-only populations. Here we show how two-sex populations can be similarly reconstructed and probabilistic estimates of various sex ratio quantities obtained. We demonstrate the method by reconstructing the populations of India from 1971 to 2001, Thailand from 1960 to 2000, and Laos from 1985 to 2005. We found evidence that in India, sex ratio at birth (SRB) exceeded its conventional upper limit of 1.06, and, further, increased over the period of study, with posterior probability above 0.9. In addition, almost uniquely, we found evidence that life expectancy at birth (e0) was lower for females than for males in India (posterior probability for 1971-1976 0.79), although there was strong evidence for a narrowing of the gap through to 2001. In both Thailand and Laos, we found strong evidence for the more usual result that e0 was greater for females and, in Thailand, that the difference increased over the period of study.

Center for Research on Child Wellbeing [Princeton University] Working Paper: “Not Quite Out On The Streets: Housing Insecurity Among Low-Income Urban Fathers,” by Colleen Wynn and Lauren McClain (WP13-17-FF, December 2013, .pdf format, 43p.).

Abstract:

It has long been acknowledged that housing is essential for access to employment, social services, healthcare, and other forms of assistance that help move people out of poverty. Through identifying dimensions of housing insecurity, policymakers, as well as researchers, will have a better understanding of the protective factors that make families more secure and the risk factors that raise their level of insecurity. These analyses use resident and non-resident, low-income, urban fathers’ responses to the five publicly available waves of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing (n = 4350) dataset to examine the relationship between protective and risk factors and housing insecurity. As access to protective factors increases, fathers’ risk of housing semi-insecurity and insecurity decreases, and as fathers are more exposed to risk factors, both their housing semi-insecurity and insecurity risks increase.

Centro De Estudios Monetarios Y Financieros [Madrid, Spain] Working Paper: “Moral hazard and debt maturity,” by Gur Huberman and Rafael Repullo (Working Paper No. 1311, December 2013, .pdf format, 45p.).

Abstract:

We present a model of the maturity of a bank’s uninsured debt. The bank borrows funds and chooses afterwards the riskiness of its assets. This moral hazard problem leads to an excessive level of risk. Short-term debt may have a disciplining effect on the bank’s risk-shifting incentives, but it may lead to inefficient liquidation. We characterize the conditions under which short-term and long-term debt are feasible, and show circumstances under which only short-term debt is feasible and under which short-term debt dominates long-term debt when both are feasible. Thus, short-term debt may have the salutary effect of mitigating the moral hazard problem and inducing lower risk-taking. The results are consistent with key features of the common narrative of the period preceding the 2007-2009 financial crisis.
