A. “Unpartnered Mothers, Living Arrangements, and Poverty: A Cross-national Comparison,” by James M. Raymo, Timothy Smeeding, Kathryn Edwards, and Hillary Caruthers (Working Paper 2014-06, June 2014, .pdf format, 33p.).

Abstract:

We examine relationships between living arrangements and the economic well-being of unpartnered mothers relative to partnered mothers in five countries – Australia, Germany, Korea, the U.K. and the U.S. Using harmonized data from the Cross-National Equivalent File (CNEF), we demonstrate marked cross-national differences in the living arrangements of ‘unpartnered’ mothers, with lone-mother households relatively common in Germany and coresidence with parents common in the U.S. and Korea. There are also clear differences in the economic benefits that unpartnered mothers derive from coresidence with parents and others, which are most pronounced in Australia, but relatively limited in the U.S. These findings have implications for understanding the ways in which unpartnered parenthood and living arrangements contribute to differences in levels of poverty and inequality across countries and in comparison to the United States.

B. “Gender Equity, Opportunity Costs of Parenthood, and Educational Differences in Unintended First Births: Insights from Japan,” by James M. Raymo, Kelly Musick, and Miho Iwasawa (Working Paper 2014-05, June 2014, .pdf format, 36p.).

Abstract:

We examine educational differences in the intendedness of first births in Japan using data from a nationally representative survey of married women (N = 2,406). We begin by describing plausible scenarios for a negative, null, and positive educational gradient in unintended first births. In contrast to well-established results from the U.S., we find evidence of a positive educational gradient in Japan. Net of basic demographic controls, we find higher reporting of unintended first births among university graduates relative to less-educated women. This pattern is consistent with a scenario emphasizing the high opportunity costs of motherhood in countries like Japan where growing opportunities for women in employment and other domains of public life have not been accompanied by changes in the highly asymmetric roles of men and women within the family. We discuss potential implications of this suggestive finding for other low-fertility settings.

Department of Economic and Social Affairs Working Paper: “A comparative study of the forecasting performance of three international organizations,” by Pingfan Hong and Zhibo Tan (DWP/133, June 2014, .pdf format, 13p.).

Abstract:

This article evaluates and compares the forecasting performance of three international organizations: the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The annual forecasts made by the United Nations in the period of 1981-2011 are found to be fairly robust, in terms of bias and efficiency. In comparison, the forecasting performance of the United Nations is found to be marginally better than the other two organizations during the period of 2000-2012. However, the forecasts of all these organizations missed the Great Recession of 2009 by a large margin.
