Center for Family and Demographic Research [Bowling Green State University] Working Paper: “Change in the Stability of First Premarital Cohabitation, 1980-2009,” by Susan L. Brown, Esther O. Lamidi, and Wendy D. Manning (WP2015-26, September 2015, .pdf format, 31p.).

Abstract:

The rapid growth in cohabitation over the past quarter century necessitates studies of changes in the stability and outcomes of cohabitation. We utilized data from the 1988 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) and the most recent 2011-2013 NSFG data to examine the outcomes of two comparable cohorts of first premarital cohabitors (1980-1984 and 2005-2009). Our results showed that cohabitations formed between 2005 and 2009 lasted longer, 28 months on average, than those formed in the early 1980s which lasted for an average of 18 months. We also found that the lengthening of cohabitation over time which cuts across sociodemographic groups – race/ethnicity, education, and motherhood status – resulted mostly from the declining rate of transitioning to marriage. Our study documents shifts in both the composition of premarital cohabitors and in the predictors of stability of cohabitation over the 25 year period.

Baltagi and Long Liu (Working Paper No. 183, September 2015, .pdf format, 16p.).

Abstract:

This paper revisits the joint and conditional Lagrange Multiplier tests derived by Debarsy and Ertur (2010) for a fixed effects spatial lag regression model with spatial auto-regressive error, and derives these tests using artificial Double Length Regressions (DLR). These DLR tests and their corresponding LM tests are compared using an empirical example and a Monte Carlo simulation.

University of Minnesota Population Center Working Paper: “Trends in Spouses’ Shared Time in the United States, 1965-2012,” by Katie Genadek, Sarah M. Flood, and Joan Garcia Roman (Working Paper No. 2015-01, September 2015, .pdf format, 25p.).

Abstract:

Despite major demographic changes over the past fifty years and strong evidence that time spent with a spouse is important for marriages, we know very little about how time with a spouse has changed, or not changed, in the United States. Using time use survey data from 1965-2012, we examine trends in couples’ shared time in the United States during a period of major changes in American marriages and families. We find that couples without children spend more total time together and time alone together now than they did in 1965, both peaking in 1975. For parents, time spent together increased continually over the period, most dramatically for time spent with a spouse and children. Decomposition analyses show that changes in behavior rather than changing demographics explain these trends, and we find that the increases in couples’ shared time are primarily concentrated in leisure activities.
