Access Status: Access limited to UW-Madison campus

Date Ordered: 5/28/1999

Documentation: Machine-readable. Compressed archival documentation and data appear in zipped format. File expands to display 5 separate .DAT files containing study data, a corresponding MS WORD document representing study codebook and data dictionary, and four plain text documents, two of which serve as README help files for this study [1) individual, 2) household]. The remaining .TXT documents provide are provided as guides to writing study data to SAS (again, for both individual and household). Categori.dbf is a dBase file contains category codes for certain variables. This file can be viewed with MS Excel 2000. 9/2002 Susan De Vos deposited 3 additional dictionary files in MS Word format with us. One is for household level data and the other two are for person level data. Some information starting in column 150 is invisible in the original dictionary for person level data file. Susan De Vos modified the file and recovered the information and gave her modified dictionary file for the personal level data to us. Questionnaire and codebook files can be downloaded from David Lam's Resources for Research Projects on Brazil website.

Abstract: National household sample survey is also known as PNAD. It is an annual national household survey, conducted by IBGE (Brazilian Census Bureau). It has been conducted since 1973 except in years in which census data was collected and years with budget constraint. PNAD contains extensive data on personal and household information. Household data includes characteristics of the household such as quality of building materials (roof, walls, and floor), utility services (water supply, sewage disposal, electricity), domestic utensils (radio, stove, fridge, etc), rural or urban condition, among others. Relating to household composition, PNAD explores family size, household income, among others. Individual information is collected on education, working status, hours worked and occupation is presented in good detail. Data on income, relation to the head of the household, sex, age, among others are also available. Information on race, migration, nuptiality and fertility are included in this 1995 survey.
