Comments: What Sys2asci.sas does is reads in an SPSS portable file and outputs an SPSS program that can be used to read in the raw data file that SPSS produces. Created by Dean Nelson, SSML, to allow DPLS to archive raw ASCII data files with a SPSS created "codebook."

Access Status: Unrestricted.

Date Ordered: 6/4/1997

Documentation: Program contains internal documentation.

Abstract: This program is useful in the conversion of an SPSS system file into a more "archivable" raw ASCII file. It does this by producing the SPSS variable definition file that accompanies the ASCII file which SPSS writes out from the system file. This variable definition file can thus serve as a codebook (a reasonable one, but obviously not perfect). An example of usage are the Wisconsin Migrant Farm Workers data which were archived in the spring and summer of 1997.
