Comments: This CD-ROM provides a java script to access any NES study. This is a Windows 95-based program. After the setup.exe is installed to our NT Workstation, the javalib.exe file needs to be separately expanded using Winzip. If not, NT will complain with overwriting warning message and the java script won't run on NT Workstation. This CD-ROM replaces the previous ICPSR NES CD-ROM, CD0010. Only the 1948-1996 cumulative file is installed to the hard drive due to disk space constraint.

Abstract: This 1948-1997 NES CD-ROM contains 45 data collections with over 50,000 survey questions and related variables spanning 50 years of American politics and public opinion. Its contents include: all NES time-series studies (presidential and midterm, from 1948 to 1996), all NES pilot studies (1979 to 1997), all NES panel studies and other special studies and the 1948-1996 cumulative data file, merging over 600 variables and 41,627 respondents. The NES Guide to Public Opinion and Electoral Behavior provides immediate access to over 120 pre-run tables and graphs of public opinion and electoral behavior and choice since 1952. Each table is presented in summary format, as well as by ten sets of demographic variables. A Web browser is required to view the Guide's pre-run tables. The questionnaires are in Adobe Acrobat format (with Acroread software) for most of the time series. ASCII data files and codebooks along with SAS and SPSS data definition files are included for every dataset. This Windows95-based software enables users to browse and/or search all variables in any dataset, run simple descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations (with filters and weights applied, if desired), and subset the ASCII data and associated codebook files as well as SAS or SPSS data definition files. Visit NES web site for the most current information.
