Abstract: The international adult literacy survey (IALS) was conducted by 13 countries to collect information on adult literacy. In this survey, large samples of adults (ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 per country) were given the same broad test of their literacy skills between 1994 and 1996. The results provide the most detailed portrait ever created on the condition of adult literacy and its relationship with an array of background and demographic characteristics. The participating countries are Australia, Belgium (Flanders), Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. There are 433 variables and 38,358 records in this IALS microdata file. (exerpted from IALS user's guide)
