Abstract: National household sample survey is also known as PNAD. is an annual national household survey, conducted by IBGE (Brazilian Census Bureau). It has been conducted since 1973 except in years in which census data was collected and years with budget constraint. PNAD contains extensive data on personal and household information. Household data includes characteristics of the household such as quality of building materials (roof, walls, and floor), utility services (water supply, sewage disposal, electricity), domestic utensils (radio, stove, fridge, etc), rural or urban condition, among others. Relating to household composition, PNAD explores family size, household income, among others. Individual information is collected on education, working status, hours worked and occupation is presented in good detail. Data on income, relation to the head of the household, sex, age, among others are also available. Many issues such as access to health system, government programs (food supplementation at school, milk program, etc), fertility, and use of contraceptives were explored in the 1986 survey.
