Abstract: This study contains a set of 26 aggregate censuses of Louisiana covering the entire period from its colonization by the French at the beginning of the eighteenth century to the eve of the Civil War. An aggregate census counts the number of persons in a population sharing specified characteristics, or combinations of characteristics, such as place of residence, gender, race, and age group. The data is not household-level or individual-level. Although statistics in aggregate censuses are usually derived from information recorded by an enumerator who visits every family in a district, the results are collected and tabulated for presentation in a summary report. All the censuses in the data set enumerate the entire population of European and African origin (but not American Iindians except for Indian slaves) in the territory of “Louisiana,” as defined at the date of the census. The area actually covered varies considerably from census to census. The Louisiana census data set does not include censuses of New Orleans alone or of particular districts within the larger territorial unit of Louisiana.
