Abstract: The Louisiana Free Database contains 4,068 records and 62 fields involving manumissions of slaves. The fields include MEANS, the means of manumission, FREEREL, relationship of freer to freed when a third party purchased the slave in order to manumit, REASONS given for manumission, GRATUITOUS, if no payment was made, CONDITIONS imposed, for example, additional time of service required, SALEVALP, the price paid in case of a purchase or self-purchase, FREER, the name of a third party involved in the manumission, and FREED, the likelihood that the slave was actually manumitted. This database contains family relationships among the manumitted including names, racial categories, ages, and birthplaces of mothers of slaves involved in manumissions. WHITEDAD indicates if the manumitted was either certainly, probably or possibly freed by a white father. There are first and last names, gender, racial designations, and birthplaces of the deceased, the masters, sellers, buyers, and freers in the database.
