Comments: 11/00 This CD was first obtained from NCES. It was defected and did not work with Salt and Pepper. A new CD was received in December. Run setup to install the ECB program to D:\ECLS on Salt and Pepper. Guest account needs full control to the directory and its subdirectory. This CD contains an ECB program that allows users to easily examine the variables in each of the ECLS-K Base Year Public-Use ECB data sets. ECB can also create SAS, SPSS for Windows, and STATA codes that will generate an extract data file from any of the data files on the CD-ROM. 5/01 See an errata sheet received from NCES. 10/03 This program was intalled in C:\Program Files\ECLS-K Base Year Public-Use on Spearmint and Peppermint. 9/06 Program is installed on Ketchup and Mustard. 5/14 Use this line of code in the Target field for shortcut properties: %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\VMCPropertyHandler.dll,LaunchVMSal "Windows XP Mode" "||51cbf5eb" "ECLS-K Base Year Public-Use". It allows ECB to run on a virtual Windows XP machine. After a tag file, a SPSS syntax file and a codebook file are created by ECB, run the batch file, run.bat in C:\Data\ECLSK to mount the ISO image of the CD-Rom where the data files reside. If the batch file is not run, data files can not be read from the CD-Rom drive E.

Abstract: The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K) is an ongoing effort by the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The study follows a nationally representative sample of approximately 22,000 children from kindergarten through fifth grade. These children come from both public and private schools and attended both full-day and part-day kindergarten programs. They come from diverse socioeconomic and racial/ethnic backgrounds. Also participating in the study, are the children's parents, teachers and schools. The purposes of ECLS-K are to provide national data on (1) children's transitions to nonparental care, early education programs, and school and (2) children's experiences and growth through the fifth grade. The data can test hypotheses about the effects of a wide range of family, school, community, and individual variables on children's development, early learning, and early performance in school. This CD-ROM contains the public-use base year data obtained in fall of 1998 and spring of 1999. It includes three data files: school, teacher, and child. The school file contains one record for each of the 866 schools providing a school administrator questionnaire; the teacher file contains one record for each of the 3,305 responding teachers; and the child file contains one record for each of the 21,260 responding students. School- and teacher-level data, including composites, are also stored on the child catalog for the convenience of users performing child-level analyses that require school or teacher data. Each of these data files is stored in the root directory of the CD-ROM as an ASCII file; the file names are school.dat, teacher.dat, and child.dat. However, it is strongly recommended that users access the data using the Electronic Code Book (ECB) software available on the CD-ROM rather than access the ASCII files directly. Appendix B contains the record layout for the school, teacher, and child files.
