Abstract: This survey was conducted in 1955. More than 35,000 twelfth-grade students in 516 schools participated in the study. The schools were a representative sample of public high schools stratified by school size and geographic region. The students in these schools were given a short attitude test and were asked to fill out a questionnaire. The school principals also filled out a questionnaire asking about significant attributes of the school itself and of the community. It was intended that these data be sufficient to answer questions abut the number of students who planned on college, the factors affecting these plans and possibilities for increasing the number of college students by supporting college work financially or by altering other circumstances in a favorable direction.
