Abstract: The Cross-National Time-Series database, abbreviated CNTS, was a product of the State University of New York (Binghamton), launched in the fall of 1968 by Arthur S. Banks under the aegis of the University's Center for Comparative Political Research (subsequently the Center for Social Analysis). This database was, in part, the outcome of an effort initiated a year earlier to assemble, in machine readable, longitudinal format, certain of the aggregate data resources of The Statesman's Yearbook. Over the years the sources for the data have gone beyond the Statesman's Yearbook. (Please refer to a file, biblio.txt for all the data sources used in this database.) Variables included in this database are: Area & Population, Industrial, & Labor Force, Size of Military, National Government Revenue & Expenditure, School Enrollment, Domestic Conflict Event Data, International Status Indicators, National Income & Currency, Telegraph & Telephone Data, Election Data, Legislative Process, Percent Annual Change Data, Trade Data, Energy Production & Consumption, Literacy, Physician Data, Urbanization, Highway vehicles, Mail Flow Data, Political Data, Industrial Production, Media (Radio, TV, Newspaper, Books), and Railroad Data. Some of them are dated back to 1815. For more information about this database, please visit CNTS web site.
