Abstract: The Current Population Surveys (CPS) are administered monthly by the Bureau of the Census to over 50,000 households. These surveys gather a wealth of information on the education, labor force status, demographics, and other aspects of the U.S. population. Each month's CPS has a different emphasis. The October surveys focus on school enrollment. This uniform October CPS file was created in the Center for Demography and Ecology in the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This data set contains extracts plus recodes for 1968-2000. It contains information for a person who is 3-34 years old plus information for the person or persons in the same household who are the head of household and spouse of head of household. Only civilians are eligible to be extracted as a 3-34 year old and to be coded as the head or spouse of head. Some of the variables were extracted directly from the October CPS data, and the remainder were extracted and recoded. The data is available both as an SPSS save file (uoctcps68_00.sav) and as a raw ascii file (uoctcps68_00.dat). There are 2,382,776 cases.
