Abstract: The Field (California) Poll, conducted four or more times each year by the Field Institute, is a California statewide survey of opinions and attitudes on social and political issues, including election campaigns. The Field Institute is a public policy research organization supported by business, academic institutions, state government agencies and the communications media for the purpose of conducting public opinion research on a variety of social and political issues. Institute surveys provide public opinion data for observing and studying public opinion in the state of California. This machine-readable data collection consists of surveys conducted regularly since 1956. Subjects surveyed include taxes and government spending, economic well-being, growth and the environment, quality of life, state elections, initiatives and ballot propositions, job evaluations of federal and state elected officials, campaign financing, political ideology, the state legislature, labor unions, crime and capital punishment, drugs, prisons and jails, justices of the courts, science and technology, public schools, colleges and universities, health care, physical and mental health, AIDS, immigration, ethnicity and the political process, minority population, personal ethics, and the status of women. Selected surveys and questions are repeated over time so changes in public opinion can be monitored. Currently DPLS only has polls for 1999, 2000 and 2001.
