Abstract: National household sample survey is also known as PNAD. It is an annual national household survey, conducted by IBGE (Brazilian Census Bureau). It has been conducted since 1973 except in years in which census data was collected and years with budget constraint. PNAD contains extensive data on personal and household information. Household data includes characteristics of the household such as quality of building materials (roof, walls, and floor), utility services (water supply, sewage disposal, electricity), domestic utensils (radio, stove, fridge, etc), rural or urban condition, among others. Relating to household composition, PNAD explores family size, household income, among others. Individual information is collected on education, working status, hours worked and occupation is presented in good detail. Data on income, relation to the head of the household, sex, age, among others are also available. The 1998 survey includes health supplement. This survey provides an unique opportunity to study health related issues in Brazil. PNAD brings information on ADL, IADL, self-reported health, comorbidities (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, among others), psychological problems as well as dental problems. Access to health care and health insurance are also detailed explored. Limitations to work and to perform activities are investigated in detail. Race, migration (detailed data), fertility and information on orphanhood are available. Data allows the estimation of infant and adult mortality.
