Abstract: The National Household Education Survey (NHES) is a telephone survey of the noninstitutionalized civilian population of the U.S. Households are selected for the survey using random digit dialing (RDD) methods. Data are collected using computer assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) procedures. This 1996 Household and Library Use Survey collected demographic and education information about individual household members, as well as the following information on household use of public libraries: proximity to a public library, borrowing of materials, use of the library for schoolwork, attending children's activities sponsored by the library, use of the library for enjoyment or hobbies, use of the library for course-taking, and use of the library for job-seeking.
