Abstract: The China Historical Geographic Information System (CHGIS) project was launched on January 8th 2001, with funding from the Luce Foundation. The CHGIS intends to establish a database of historical administrative units for different periods in Chinese History, and provide a base GIS platform for researchers to use for spatial analysis, temporal statistical modeling, and representation of selected historical units as digital maps. This is the version 2.0 release of CHGIS. It includes Time Series Data for the provinces of Fujian, Zhejiang and the southern part of Jiansu from 222 BC to 1911 CE. The 1911 Data has spatial data for the provinces of Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Shaanxi and Zhejiang. Its 1820 Data contains spatial data for the entire territory claimed by the Qing Dynasty for the year 1820. The DEM data are topographic background images derived from satellite remote sensing data. Several supplemental datasets such as Russian Historical Maps and other features that have been developed or processed from publicly available sources for use with CHGIS layers are also included in this CD-ROM..
