Abstract: The data were gathered in 1993 in the context of the 'Regional Program on Enterprise Development in Africa' (RPED), a project co-ordinated by the World Bank. The purpose of the project was to create a large firm level data-base including data on the performance of manufacturing firms as well as information on virtually all aspects of the business environment.

As in other RPDE-data sets, in each country firms were selected from the four main manufacturing sectors: agro-industries (code 1), including food and beverages, textiles and clothing (code 2), wood working (code 3) and metal working (code 4). Most of the firms in the survey were located in the capital of Burundi, Bujumbura, where manufacturing activity is concentrated. But a number of firms in other parts of the country (Gitega, Muramvya, Ngozi, Rumonge, and the sugar producer Sosumo) were also included.
