Comments: These data and their documentation are available via the DPLS Online Archive. 10/04 While DPLS staff was converting this study to Nesstar format, it was discovered that the raw ASCII data file is in card image format not logical record length. Each record consists of three 80-column cards. However, only variables on the first two cards are documented in the codebook. Information for the third card is missing. The correct column location for the variables are listed in parenthesis after the coding instruction in the codebook. No change was made to the data file.

Access Status: Unrestricted access

Documentation: Hard copy codebook and machine-readable. Document files in this archive have the corrected information on the record length for the English slave trade, 1791-1799 (House of Lords survey). The column locations for variables on the second card in the data dictionary have been corrected accordingly.

Abstract: These data were collected to examine the growth of slave trade to the Americas, the internal dynamics of its volume, and how it compared with other trades within the British Empire and with other leading slave trade routes of other European powers.
