Comments: As received from NCES, NCES 2006-035. Run Setup.exe from the CD-Rom to install ECB. CHILD5L.Dat the ASCII version of public use longitudinal ECLS-K K-5 grade child data is on the ECB CD-Rom. On Appendix CD-Rom under directory, Appendix D are data files, SAS program, SPSS program, and record layout files for fifth grade base weights and adjustment factors and cross-round weight status data files. For more information about ECLS study visit this site. 11/06 ECB program is installed on the hard drive of Ketchup and Mustard. The data file, child5l.dat is copied to the hard dirve of the two public-use PCs, so users don't need to load the CD-Rom in the drive. The path to the data file is C:\data\eclsk5\. 7/09 Beer and Wine replaced Ketchup and Mustard.

Abstract: The ECLS-K began in Fall of 1998 with a nationally representative sample of approximately 21,000 kindergartners from about 1,000 kindergarten programs, both public and private. These children will be followed longitudinally through the twelfth grade. Data collections are scheduled in the fall and spring of kindergarten and first grade, in the spring of third and fifth grade, and follow-ups in eighth, tenth and twelfth grade. In addition to students data, teachers data, parents data and administrators data are also available from this study. The ECLS-K permits the examination of the relationship between a wide range of family, school, classroom, and individual variables and children’s development, learning, and school performance from kindergarten through twelfth grade. This CD-ROM contains kindergarten, first, third and fifth grade public-use data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K). It contains an electronic codebook (ECB), data files, and survey instruments and ECB documentation for the first six waves of the ECLS-K. It provides information on the changes in children's experiences and achievement across school years. Please note that the household roster that lists all household members, their relationship to the sampled child, and selected other characteristics is not included in this longitudinal file. Instead, composite variables describing the children’s family structure and selected characteristics of the family members have been added to the file. Data users when conduct cross-sectional or within grade analyses should use the separate base year (kindergarten), first grade, third grade and fifth grade data files and ECBs.
