Abstract: The Area Resource File (ARF) is a national county-level health resources information system. It contains statistics on the following categories of health resources: health professions, health training programs, health facilities, measures of resource scarcity, and health status. It also contains specific geographic codes and descriptors and information on economic activity, and socioeconomic and enviromental characteristics. ARF 2005 contains information on more than 6,000 variables for each of the nation's counties. All information is derived from exisiting data sources, such as the National Center for Health Statistics (mortality and natality records), American Hospital Association (facilities statistics), and American Medical Association (physician specialty data). More than 50 data source files are used, and millions of micro data records are processed to create the ARF.
