Abstract: The marriage data file is maintained by calendar year. The file is compresed of: (1) records for all marriages received in machine-readable format and (2) sample records, or all records for those states with small numbers of events, received on microfilm (coded and keyed by NCHS personnel). The tape file includes data from selected States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands which meet certain reporting criteria for inclusion in the Marriage Registration Area (MRA). The criteria are explained in the Technical Appendix which is part of the documentation package. In an effort to obtain national marriage data to use along with the detailed population bases available from the 1980 census, marriage records are also included from five States not in the MRA. These states are identified by code "2" in position 79 of the record. Each record contains a weight field (field locations 18-20) which is designed to inflate tabular totals to the Sates' figures and to the MRA figures. Note, however, in NCHS publications, U.S. data and Possessions data are tabulated separately. Totals for the MRA do not include data or Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Included are the data (UNIX compressed .Z ASCII format), an electronic codebook (Adobe Acrobat .pdf format, also available in the codebook section of the Print Library), UNIX counts of record numbers and lengths, UNIX checksums, a usage disclaimer, and a readme.1st file. See the readme.1st file for filename definitions. Note that this file is restricted to CDE researchers only. This data can also be found on CD-0107. Acquired 10/99 from NCHS Tape Program via Penn State Population Center (Lisa Broniszewski).
