Abstract: The Latinobarometer is an annual public opinion survey produced and published by Latinobarómetro Corporation, a non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Santiago, Chile. Its 1996 survey was conducted in Spain and 17 Latin America countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. A total of 21,200 interviews were carried out in the 18 countries using mostly urban samples of about 1,200 respondents in each. Public opinions on social, economic, political and regional integration issues were gathered in this survey. Topics in the questionnaire include: support for economic integration, knowledge of regional economic agreements, awareness of the European Union, awareness of the Mercosur, Andean Pact, The United Nations and NAFTA, image of other countries of the region, support of democracy, satisfaction with democracy and the perception of its consolidation, priority of the environment, image of progress, economic expectations of the country and personal economic expectations.
