Abstract: The Project for Excellence (PEJ) in Journalism's News Coverage Index (NCI) uses empirical methods to measure and analyze the American news media on a continuing basis. It offers the American public a benchmark to check what is being covered and what is not in the American news agenda at a time of growing debate about the press' influence, standards and economic foundation. It attempts to catalog and study five main sectors of mainstream media-print, network TV, cable, online, and radio. They include evening and morning network news, several hours of daytime and prime time cable news each day, newspapers from around the country, the top online news sites, and radio, including headlines, long form programs and talk. In all, the Index sample includes 52 outlets (27 to 30 each week-day with some rotation), every Monday through Sunday. These media outlets are the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Columbus Dispatch, Tampa Tribune, Seattle Times, the Day (CT), Rome News Tribune (GA), Ventura News (CA), Yahoo News, MSNBC.com, CNN.com, NYTimes.com, Google News, AOL News, FoxNews.com, USAToday.com, WashingtonPost.com, ABCNews.com, HuffingtonPost.com, Wall Street Journal Online, ABC-Good Morning America, CBS-Early Show, NBC-Today, ABC-World News Tonight, CBS-CBS Evening News, NBC-NBC Nightly News, PBS-Newshour with Jim Lehrer, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, Nighttime CNN, Situation Room (6 pm), CNN Tonight, CNN Prime Time, Anderson Cooper 360, Nighttime Fox News, Special Report w/ Bret Baier, Fox Report w/ Shepard Smith, O'Reilly Factor, Hannity, Nighttime MSNBC, the Ed Show, Hardball (7 pm), Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann, the Rachael Maddow Show, ABC Radio headlines, CBS Radio headlines, NPR-Morning Edition, NPR-All Things Considered, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Ed Schultz. As of March 2010, PEJ has made these four data sets available to the public: 2007 News Coverage Index Data Set, 2008 News Coverage Index Data Set, 2008 Additional Content Studies and 2008 Campaign Coverage Index Data Set.
