Abstract: The Integrated Health Interview Series (IHIS) is created by the Minnesota Population Center (MPC) and State Health Access Data Assistance Center (SHADAC) at the University of Minnesota. IHIS contains a selected harmonized set of data and documentation based on the public use files of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 1969 to 2009. These data was recoded to increase consistency over time and to facilitate cross-temporal comparison. Online documentation on NHIS variables and comparability issues is available at IHIS website, Registration is required to use this free database. IHIS has a built in data extraction system which allows users to select record type, years and variables to create their own subsets. Please note variable names have been harmonized in IHIS and they are not the same variable names in the original public use NHIS files. NHIS is an annual cross-sectional household interview survey of approximately 100,000 people in 40,000 households. The current NHIS sample design includes the oversampling of Blacks, Hispanics and Asians. NHIS is designed to monitor the health of the United States population through the collection and analysis of data on a broad range of health topics.
