Abstract: The Area Resource File (ARF) is a national county-level health resources information system. The data is released annually. The ARF 2009-2010 contains information on more than 6,000 variables for each of the nation's counties. It has statistics on health resources such as, health care professions, health professions training, hospital utilization, and hospital expenditures. It also contains information on economic activity, and socioeconomic and environmental characteristics. This basic file includes geographic codes and descriptors which can be linked to many other files and to aggregate counties into various geographic groupings. All information is derived from existing data sources, such as the National Center for Health Statistics (mortality and natality records), American Hospital Association (facilities statistics), and American Medical Association (physician specialty data). More than 50 data source files are used, and millions of micro data records are processed to create the ARF. Reproduction for re-use or resale is not authorized without the expressed permission of the Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services. Please note data from the American Dental Association, the American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association, and InterStudy are subject to copyright restrictions; these data may not be copied or reproduced in whole or in part without the prior consent of the copyright owner.
