Abstract: The total number of business establishments, mid-March employment figures, and first-quarter and annual payrolls are supplied in these datasets at the county, state, and national levels. Also provided are data on the number of establishments by employment-size class.

SOURCE: (1) United States Bureau of the Census economic censuses, the Annual Company Organization Survey, and the Annual Survey of Manufactures, and (2) United States Internal Revenue Service Quarterly Payroll File

UNIVERSE: All business establishments in the 50 states and the District of Columbia with one or more paid employees, excluding agriculture production, railroad, government, and household employment.

NOTE: The United States summary data are contained in one file. The state- and county-level data are each contained in nine files, with one file corresponding to a Census Division. There is one file containing Standard Industrial Classification codes.
