Abstract: Respondents were asked their attitudes toward political parties, perception of the Chilean parties, orientation toward Presidential candidates in the September, 1958, election, perception of the candidates' platforms and who was most likely to win the election. The pre-election survey investigated the respondents' party loyalty, sense of political efficacy, self-perception on the political spectrum, past voting pattern, assessment of media influence in the campaign and attitudes toward outlawing the Communist Party, redistributing the land to peasants and opportunity structure in Chilean society. The post-election study contained a good deal of personal data (birth place, occupation, social class, residence), information concerning group affiliation and orientation, assessment of media influence and cross-pressures in voting, and respondents' vote, reasons for voting and reasons for changing vote if a change was involved.
