Abstract: This study contains data on 158 political parties operating in 53 countries during 1950 through 1962. The parties included are from a stratified random sample of parties (accounting for approximately 50% of all the world's party systems), plus parties from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The variables consist of both substantive coding of party characteristics and data quality measures. There are approximately 110 basic variables divided into eleven categories: institutionalization, government status, social attraction, social concentration, social reflection, issue orientation, goal orientation, autonomy, degree of organization, centralization of power, coherence, and involvement.
