Abstract: This national sample of residents and fellows in training during 1976-1977 was funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration under contract #232-80-0032, and by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation under grant #5970. The data collection describes the practice of young internists in order to understand the determinants of different practice styles, especially the relationship between training and practice, and to compare the practices of four groups of physicians: general internists with traditional residencies, general internists who received their residency training in special primary care tracks, family physicians, and subspecialty internists. The study provides information about the current positions, activities, patients and physician-patient relationships, demographic characteristics and family backgrounds, and educational training histories of a cohort of young physicians. The collection consists of six files. The Patient Questionnaire contains 889 records and 178 variables and has a logical record length of 638. The Locator-Screener contains 1,598 records and 102 variables and has a logical record length of 307. The Physician Questionnaire contains 691 records and 288 variables and has a logical record length of 865. The Inpatient Encounter contains 3,420 records and 146 variables and has a logical record length of 876. The Outpatient Encounter contains 14,539 records and 124 variables and has a logical record length of 744. The Physician Sample contains 691 records and 3 variables and has a logical record length of 20.
