Abstract: This survey was conducted as part of the Rand Corporation's research program on career criminals. Rand's Second Inmate Survey was administered in late 1978 and early 1979 to convicted male inmates at 12 prisons and 14 county jails in California, Michigan, and Texas. The purpose of the survey was to provide detailed information about the criminal behavior of offenders and their associated characteristics. Emphasis was also placed on investigating other major areas of interest such as the quality of prisoner self-reports, varieties of criminal behavior, selective incapacitation, and prison treatment programs.

SOURCE: individual criminal justice histories, or rap sheets

UNIVERSE: Rand Inmate Survey offenders serving prison sentences at the time of the 1978 interview in California, Michigan, and Texas.

SAMPLE: Offenders for whom individual criminal justice histories or rap sheets were provided by each of the three states. Rap sheet information for Michigan inmates was supplemented with prison entrance and exit dates provided by the Michigan Department of Corrections.
