Abstract: These data include the number of seats held by major and minor parties in both houses of the state legislatures from 1834 to 1982, as well as the party identification of the state's governor during the term of each legislature. Data are presented for every legislature, whether annual or biennial. The information is stored in the form of two matched-merged OSIRIS data sets. One set is organized with states as the units of analysis. It has 17 variables and covers the years 1834-1985. The other set presents data in time-series form, with years as the units of analysis. The time-series file contains 951 variables (17 per state per year) and provides data from 1834 through 1974. The data from 1834 to 1868 for both datasets were collected by W. Dean Burnham, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Data for subsequent years have been added by the Archive staff. There are approximately 30,000 card-image equivalents.
