Abstract: This survey is one component of an ongoing study of the quantity and characteristics of U.S. scientific and engineering human resources, initiated by the National Science Foundation in July 1971. The survey of natural and social scientists and engineers, 1982 is the first of a series of biennial longitudinal sample surveys, with subsequent surveys of the sample of individuals to be conducted in 1984, 1986 and 1988. The survey was designed to provide data on the characteristics of persons engaged in natural and social science, engineering, or related fields. The sample was selected from an unedited file containing the information collected for each person in the 1980 Decennial Census sample.
