Abstract: The Survey of Natural and Social Scientists and Engineers, 1982-1984, one in a series of biennial longitudinal sample surveys, was designed to provide data on the characteristics of persons engaged in natural and social science, engineering, or related fields including race, marital status, employment, industry, occupation, income, family background, military service, formal education and training and/or vocational or technical training histories, and employment history. The 1984 sample consists of the 1982 cases, plus a sample of those determined to be 'out-of-scope' in 1982 (i.e., not meeting NSF's occupation criteria) were re-interviewed in 1984 and included in the sample if determined to be 'in-scope'. The original sample was selected from an unedited file containing the information collected for each person in the 1980 Decennial Census sample. Selected data from the 1980 Census of population are present along with complete 1982 and 1984 survey data.
